RVing with Pets: Expert Travel Tips You’ll Love

RV life is just better with paws on board.
There’s nothing like waking up with your dog curled up by the door, or watching your cat sunbathe in the window while the world rolls by. Traveling with pets brings comfort, companionship, and a whole lot of joy to life on the road — but it also takes some planning to get it right.
Over time, I’ve figured out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to RVing with pets. From keeping them calm during travel days to setting up a space that feels like home, here are the tips and tools that help me keep things safe, smooth, and stress-free — for both of us.

🦴 Getting Ready Before the Trip
I always start with a pet checklist before I hit the road — it’s the easiest way to make sure nothing important gets left behind. Some of the non-negotiables: updated ID tags, a printed copy of vaccine records, a leash that’s not fraying at the clip, and enough food to last a few extra days (just in case plans change).
I keep everything packed in a dedicated “pet bag” — food, waste bags, collapsible bowls, meds, and extras like paw balm or calming spray. For storing kibble, I use the Gamma2 Vittles Vault. It seals tight, doesn’t take up too much space, and keeps the food fresh no matter where I’m parked.
A familiar toy or blanket goes in the RV, too — something that smells like home. It makes a difference when everything around them keeps changing.
🚗 Travel Day Setup
Travel days can be stressful for animals if they don’t feel secure. I don’t let pets ride loose — it’s not safe, and it makes it harder for them to relax. Instead, I use a COOYOO Dog Seat Belt Harness that clips into the seatbelt system and gives just enough room for them to sit or lay comfortably.
I also keep water within reach using a collapsible bowl and plan for breaks every few hours. Even if a pet seems fine, stopping for a quick walk or potty break makes the trip more comfortable for everyone.
One rule I won’t break: no pets left in the RV without temperature control. Even if the weather feels mild, it can heat up inside fast. I treat it the same way I would if a kid or friend were inside — if I wouldn’t sit in there, neither should they.
🛋️ Comfort Inside the RV
Small spaces can feel overwhelming, especially to a pet who’s used to having more room to roam. I always carve out a “pet zone” inside the RV — just a bed, a blanket, or a small crate that’s all theirs. It gives them somewhere to settle, especially during setup or winding down after a busy day.
To prevent slipping, I lay down a non-slip dog mat near their bed and the door. It helps keep them steady when the floor’s slick and gives them a soft spot to rest.
For grooming and cleanup, I keep a ChomChom roller and a stash of towels handy. I also added a paw washer near the RV steps — after one too many muddy campsite exits, it earned its permanent spot on the packing list.
🏕️ Campground Setup & Outdoor Time
When I’m parked, I set up a little outdoor space so my pets can enjoy fresh air safely. I use a foldable metal playpen that’s easy to store and quick to assemble. It gives them room to move around without worrying about leashes getting tangled or them wandering off.
Of course, I still bring the leash for walks and always pick up after them — no matter where I’m camping. It’s a simple way to be a good neighbor, and most campgrounds have clear rules about pet waste and noise.
Speaking of noise — barking can turn into a problem fast in close quarters. I keep treats nearby, and if my pet tends to get vocal when left alone, I plan activities that let them come along or make sure someone’s nearby.
💬 Final Thoughts
RVing with pets isn’t always convenient — there will be muddy paws, shedding, and a few unexpected messes. But honestly? I wouldn’t trade it for anything. With a little prep and a few reliable tools, pets can thrive on the road. And the joy they bring makes every bit of the extra effort worth it.
